The Lost Genetics

In 1983, the prohibition against the import of South American camelids was lifted and Chile was the first South American country declared free of foot and mouth disease.  The first group of 54 alpacas and llamas was ushered into the US thru Chile. Subsequent imports arrived from Bolivia in 1991, but the massive and spectacular alpaca herds of Peru remained inaccessible until 1993.  In the years from 1993 through 1998, approximately 3,000 of the best Peruvian alpacas were selected and imported to North America.  Only 68 of those were huacaya herdsires from the famous Accoyo Ranch in the remote regions of Peru.  These great Peruvian imports are now 14 to 20 years old and are reaching the end of their lives.  Only 4 remain.

At this time, the Australians could not import alpacas from Peru, but they could import from the United States.  The Australians have long been the industry leaders in fine wool production.  Keen to obtain the best Peruvian alpaca genetics for the start of their own alpaca industry, the Australians came to the United States and left with some of the "best-of-the-best" herdsires from the  Peruvian imports.  Spectacular herdsires like Auzengate, Legend, Don Julio, Ruffo, Pluro, Drambuie and Primero were spirited away to Australia after only a few months in the United States, leaving behind only a handful of offspring being carried by dams in the United States.  [REFERENCE SIRES: Skip to below]

Maria McIntyre of Pinaroo Farm Alpacas had the foresight to capture these lost genetics in a boutique herd of elite huacaya alpacas on her farm in Australia.   Maria is now widowed and retired and has sold this elite herd of 16 ARI registered animals to CASA DE ARBOLES in Monroe Washington.   It took two years to complete the import and quarantine process to bring these animals into the US.  During that time, this herd survived the devastating fires that burned their farm to the ground and the subseqeunt floods that destroyed the farm where they were moved after the fires.
